The Case Of The Nun’s Disease

0

Dr Watson laid aside his diary and read out aloud what he had written to himself to confirm that everything was as he had remembered of the case.

On glancing over my notes of the seventy odd cases in which I have during the last eight years studied the methods of my friend Sherlock Holmes, I find many tragic, some comic, a large number merely strange, but none commonplace; for, working as he did rather for the love of his art than for the acquirement of wealth, he refused to associate himself with any investigation which did not tend towards the unusual, and even the fantastic. Of all these varied cases, however, I cannot recall any which presented more singular features than The Case of the Nun’s Disease.

That my dear Watson is the crux of the matter on which everything hangs. Without that explanation, our efforts will have been in vain. It is obviously the same question that those of your profession will have asked but have failed to find the answer. With that he sat silent for a few minutes with his finger-tips still pressed together, his legs stretched out in front of him, and his gaze directed upward to the ceiling. Then he took down from the mantle piece the old and oily clay pipe, which was to him as a counsellor, and, having lit it once again, he leaned back in his chair, with the thick blue cloud-wreaths spinning up from him, and a look of infinite languor in his face. I imagined the chemicals that were pouring into his lungs, and the damage that it would be doing as he contemplated in silence the matter at hand.

I had had so many reasons to believe in my friend’s subtle powers of reasoning and extraordinary energy in action that I felt that it would only be a matter of time before he would have some solid grounds for the assured and easy demeanour with which he treated the singular mystery which he had been called upon to fathom.

So we sat, in silence, lost in our thoughts. Then all of a sudden he exclaimed, My dear fellow. says he, as we sat on either side of the fire in his lodgings at Baker Street, life is infinitely stranger than anything which the mind of man could invent. We would not dare to conceive the things which are really mere commonplaces of existence. If we could fly out of that window hand in hand, hover over this great city, gently remove the roofs, and peep in at the queer things which are going on, the strange coincidences, the plannings, the cross-purposes, the wonderful chains of events, working through generation, and leading to the most outr results, it would make all fiction with its conventionalities and foreseen conclusions most stale and unprofitable. A big smile now crossed his face and he laughed.

Holmes! What is it that you have discovered that sheds light on this most perplexing and singular of mysteries for I am completely at a loss as to find a it’s solution?

Never mind, said Holmes, laughing; it is my business to know such things. Perhaps I have trained myself to see what others overlook. The solution here is so simple that words almost fail me. He looked across to me, his face beaming with delight and mysterious countenance. Tell me Watson, what did nuns do?

Now I was completely lost! Everyone knew what nuns did. I collected together my thoughts and answered, The life in the convent was almost identical those of the male gender who lived and worked in monstestories.

Can you be more explicit my friend, and tell me what occupations the nuns were involved in? .

Well Holmes, I ventured to add. Convents were basically self-sufficient in all they did. Besides spending time in prayer, the nuns worked in their garden growing vegetables, harvested what they grew, baked bread, did all the manual tasks associated in keeping the convent in good order. Much of what they did was very physical, and they all did this in the habit that they wore.

True, Watson, but this was no more that what the peasants did in Medieval times, and they wore long flowing garments much the same as the nun’s habit and correct me if I am wrong but there is little or no evidence that they suffered from the disease. Granted peasants breasts were not bound like those of nuns which may explain why they may have been protected from the disease due to the unrestricted movement of their breasts, and also that they suckled their young, but this explanation is inadequate in determining why nuns were more susceptible to the disease that other women.

They made candles which the sold or bartered, I hastened to add.

Holmes smiled at this and he did not need to say anything, for I knew what he was thinking. Candle making was not confined to nuns but was a common trade, and as far as I knew, women of that trade did not suffer from breast cancer or any other cancer for that matter.

Think Watson, think!

For once I found myself unable to come up with anything more than that I had already said. My dear friend, please put this bumbling fool out of his misery and tell me what it is that I have overlooked. says I. ==============

Energy

Everyone’s talking about energy these days.

Worrying about not having enough.

Or it costs too much.

I’m talking about how cheap it is and how it flows. Constantly. In our bodies. Through our bodies. Easily if we’re lucky.

In Asian medicine it’s called Chi or Qi.

Do you have a Chi Machine?

I do. I bought it in 1999 and have used it almost every day since. It’s a lazy man’s (or woman’s) 20 minute meditation.

You lie on the floor on your back with your ankles on the machine and turn on the machine. It gently rotates your ankles. That’s all it does. When it stops you feel like a river is flowing through you because your breathing oxygenates every one of your cells.

It was invented by a Japanese doctor from observing the motion of goldfish.

I first learned about Chi when a Korean MD hired me to write an article to explain Eastern medical practice to Western patients. (I earned ten cents an hour on that task. I had to go all the way back to Plato just to get started.)

Writers tend to have tight shoulders. By 1999 my shoulders woke me up every night shouting at me. The Chi machine shut them up for four years. Then I slipped in some grease in a gas station and turned back to Western medicine. I now have two new shoulders.

If you’d like one to cry on, let me know. But, back to ENERGY. Thanks to quantum physics proving to us that our bodies do flow, constantly, Eastern and Western medicine are merging to our benefit.

In a recent Chicago Tribune article, Ronald Kotulak writes, Western medicine separated the mind from the body in the Middle ages when the famous French philosopher Rene Descarte agreed to accpet flesh and bone as the province of physicians, while the Catholci church claimed possession of the mind, insisting it was the creation of the soul.

But Descartes, whose works were placed on the Church’s Index of Prohibited Books in 1667, believed the two really interacted in the brain. Using the fledging powers of observation and deductive reasoning that he was then developing, Descartes could conclude that the mind is so intimately dependent upon the condition and relation of the organs of the body, that if any means can ever be found to render men wiser and more ingenious than hitherto, I believe that it is in medicine they must be sought for.

It’s taken a long time, but doctors and psychologists are now bringing the mind and the body back together amid new evidence that the mind can improve the healing process in ways that traditional medicine can’t.

Unlike earlier notions about the mind-body connection, which were often based on anecdotal stories or simply gut feelings, scientists now can document through powerful imaging technology what Descartes could only deduce, that our thoughts are capable of producing dramatic chemical and physical changes that directly affect our health.

Acupuncture and acupressure are Eastern medical practices to balance the energy flow. Some say that the cause of all negative emotion is a disruption of the body’s energy system. There’s a distinction between feelings and emotion. You can have a negative feeling but it passes by much like a smelly truck. If it lingers more than five minutes it becomes a negative emotion.

A process of acupressure is now used to get the energy flowing smoothly again. It follows the meridian outlined 5000 years ago in Eastern medicine. And, evidently, it works.

It won’t put gas in your car, but it will power your feet and heart.

Headache Pain Treatment Products: Options That You Can Consider

0

There are thousands upon thousands of headache pain treatment products on the market, and several factors to consider when purchasing one. Headache pain treatment products can be classified according to the two different types of medical systems: allopathic and complementary and alternative medicines (CAM).

Allopathic products are based on conventional medical practice and are usually what we are all familiar with. These range from over the counter aspirin and Tylenol to stronger, prescribed medications for head pain treatment.

Modern allopathic headache pain treatment products can be administered in a number of ways. For example, they can be ingested orally (the most common), they can be dissolved in the mouth, they can be administered through the nose, they can be injected below the skin, and they can even be taken is suppository form. It is important that when you are taking your headache medications to follow all of the guidelines laid down on the bottle and by your physician.

If you do not intend to consume allopathic headache pain treatment products, you may also consider treating your headaches naturally. Natural headache pain treatment products and practices give credence to more ancient and non-scientific methods of dealing with pain. They are based on CAM healing systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine, massage therapy and homeopathy.

A good recommendation for relieving headache pain is to analyze your lifestyle and determine what triggers your headaches. Very often, headaches are triggered by stress. In this respect, there are many headache pain treatment products on the market for the reducing tension naturally and hence to help you with decreasing the frequency and severity of your headaches. For instance, if you find that massage helps to relax you, you may consider buying a massage therapy product such as a massage chair or a handheld massage device.

If your headache starts with tensions in the neck and happens after a nights sleep, poor sleeping habits, postures and patterns may be the trigger. Headache pain treatment products would include a well designed sleeping pillow or a good quality mattress meant to give your back and neck maximum support. In addition, regular sleeping hours help to prevent headaches from happening.

In general, there is still great debate about the validity of holistic approaches to medicine in our modern society. Sceptics complain that anyone not following strict science is subscribing to some quack philosophy that will get them nowhere. Despite this resistance, some doctors are actually beginning to study alternative methods and products as a real treatment for headache pain. Recent double blind studies have shown that natural headache treatments can do much to deal in headache pains. This is wonderful news for people with chronic headache pains and who wish to have options, other than allopathic medicine, for treatment.

Overconsumption of drugs for headache relief can result in rebound headaches and worsening migraines. Get more information on natural headache remedy or remedies here on this site at http://www.naturalheadacheremedies.com

CoDependency And Food: Trying To Fill The Void

0

Nice girls dont speak up. Nice girls take care of and support others. These are just a few of the messages girls often receive as they are socialized. Often in adulthood, these ingrained messages turn into full-blown co-dependency. Years can go by. Unmet needs build up energy; they demand attention. But without learning skills in setting boundaries, letting others feel their own pain and making oneself a priority, food often becomes the hassle-free, soothing balm to take the edge off and release that pent up energy momentarily, that is until the guilt sets in.

We are in one of the following roles when we are co-dependent victim, rescuer or persecutor. Following are a few examples of how these roles play out in our relationship with food:

Victim: You eat too much food. You gain weight and then cant eat what you want. No matter what you do, what diet you try, you cant lose weight. No matter how you eat, you seem to continue to gain weight, feeling worse and worse.

Rescuer: The dessert makes you feel better, especially the chocolate. It makes you feel loved. You feel comforted and nurtured when you eat certain foods. You reward yourself with food over the smallest perceived successes. Or someone may rescue you when you claim you cant lose weight. Youve tried hard. Its not working for you. Go ahead and eat it. Youre not losing weight anyway. You can try that new diet tomorrow.

Persecutor: Youre great at beating up on yourself. No matter what you do, you cant lose weight. Your tortured thoughts go something like this: Im never going to lose this weight; its too hard to lose weight. I hate myself because I cant control my eating. I hate myself because Im not following this diet perfectly. Im fat. Im ugly. I hate myself.

How do you get out of your co-dependent relationship with food? First, pay attention to your thoughts I mean really notice. What are you saying to yourself about food, your body, your weight, yourself? Likely youll find that you wouldnt say those things to your worst enemy. Secondly, write those thoughts down. Ask yourself if any of your thoughts are really true about you or do they come from unconscious, past patterns. Next, ask yourself if you wish to continue to believe these thoughts. If not, forgive yourself for believing them and replace those thoughts with the ones you want.

It goes like this.

My thoughts:

I always eat too potato chips, and I cant lose weight. Im so spineless.

Are my thoughts true?

I dont always eat too many potato chips. Ive been eating dessert, which is probably why I cant lose weight. Its not the potato chips. I dont know why I said Im spineless. Im not.

Why do I eat so many potato chips?

When I ate them today, it was after that conversation with my friend. I felt angry. The crunch of the potato chips helped me feel less angry. Now that I think about it, I eat potato chips a lot when Im angry.

Do I want to continue believing my thoughts?

No. I forgive myself for eating potato chips to swallow my anger. I forgive myself for calling myself spineless.

New thoughts:

When Im angry next time, Im going to express my anger appropriately and talk with the other person. Im not going to eat potato chips. I can lose weight. I am successful in losing weight.

Learn to listen to yourself and not rely on outside cues for what you may or may not think and feel. Its not selfish to meet your real needs directly. When you meet your true needs, food is no longer a bandage. Then you can freely choose whether or not to eat that particular food without the intensity of unmet emotional needs. Its about valuing yourself and making decisions and choices that honor your value. New thinking will support your weight loss efforts.

Music Does Help Reduce Stress: Melodies For A Better Mind

0

Stress can be destructive to the human body, and can lead to an immune system much weaker than before. Stress reduction methods are imperative for all of us. Some form of stress release is needed in today’s world. Music is an amazing stress reduction tool!

Stress can be found in all aspects of human life. It can be at work, where you have to meet deadlines; at home, where you have to make sure that the children are put to bed on time; and at school, where you have to study for examinations year in and year out.

Despite its power on the human psyche, stress can be controlled, and to some extent, minimized. There are various ways to handle stress, such as through after-work sports, watching movies, meditation or listening to music and nature sounds..

Meditation, put very simply, is a method to relax the mind by easing it out of the current stressful situation. Meditation’s power, however, does not end here. It can be used to heal the body, keep the body clean, and even raise IQ points!

Meditation can be aided and deepened by effective music. The deeper the meditation, the more relaxed the body will be at the end of it, and the more refreshed and rejuvenated the owner will feel. Deep meditation music can come in various forms.

Classical music has often been used in meditation, but the variety of sounds and the often abundant array of instruments can actually awaken more than relax the mind. Deep meditation can often be arrived at by listening to smooth, slow music played by a solitary instrument.

Some deep meditation music may consist of a guitar being strummed carefully, or a flute being played, or harp strings being caressed by gentle fingers

Sounds of the forest, or plants and branches rustling against each other, are often used in deep meditation music. These rustling sounds can call to mind a garden, or a place in the natural world where the body can wander without being seen, heard, or criticized.

Forest and rustling sounds can be coupled with flutes or harps, and can call to mind natural scenes, further deepening the meditation experience.

Whale sounds have also been found to aid in deep meditation. The low hums of whales to each other actually function to signal to members of a whale heard. These signals can mean that food is available, or a youngster is missing, or danger is ahead.

Whale sounds are natural flutes: they can call to mind the freedom of the open sea, the warmth of sea water, and even the motherliness of animals as they watch over their young.

Water sounds are commonly used in deep meditation music. They are coupled with forest sounds or single instrument tracks. Water sounds can come in the form of falling rain, or babbling brooks and rivers, or the crash of ocean waves on the seashore.

Water sounds are comforting to hear for a variety of reasons. Falling rain can conjure up images of lazy afternoons spent sleeping, or curled up with a book. Flowing rivers can call up memories of childhood strolls, spent exploring rivers and streams. The ocean can reawaken memories of the beach, and relaxing vacations.

Also increasing in popularity are electronic sounds, which consist of rhythms designed to aid deep meditation. They can accompany nature sounds instead of the usual single instrument.

If you want to engage in deep meditation, consider deep meditation music, as this can aid you in achieving relaxation faster. Inquire at your local record bar and look at what tracks will suit your mood. Soon, you will feel yourself refreshed and rejuvenated as you rise out of meditation and prepare to face life’s often confusing music.

3 Tips To Health And Wellness Living

0

While there has been much progress in the advancement of health, the number of cases of cancer, obesity and diseases have not fallen but are on the rise. Many of these ailments arose because of the unhealthy sedentary lifestyle that we live nowadays. There is much that we can do to improve our health and well being. For health and wellness living, here are 3 changes that you can make.

Health and Wellness Living: Have A Proper Diet
Most people do not put much thought into nutrition. They get most of their nutritional requirements from fast food burgers. Not only is this type of food high in calories, fat, and artificial content (which is bad for your body), they can also affect your mood. Eating refined starches and ultra-processed foods can drop you into daily depression. What is worse is that we try to combat this by getting high again with more sugars or caffeine. A proper diet is the foundation for a healthy lifestyle and is a great health and wellness tip.

Vitamins are a great way of filling in those gaps when you fall short of certain nutrients. Natural supplements are now easily available in several health stores. You should however be careful not to ingest too much of certain minerals, like iron, for example. Studies have shown an excess of iron to be dangerous, so talk to your doctor about specific supplement issues.

Health and Wellness Living: Exercise
You are so busy that you find it hard to find time to exercise. This is a common phenomena. You end up with aches and pains as well as stiff muscles. A steady regimen of exercise can leave you feeling even more energized. When you exercise daily, your body grows accustomed to it and acts accordingly. Your pain threshold is raised and endorphins are released in your brain, which means you will feel better, longer.

Health and Wellness Living: Manage Stress
It would appear that stress is a precursor to many diseases and illnesses. Yet, stress is part of our everyday lives. All of us have to learn how to deal with it.

If you find that you are stressed and having difficulties coping, seek help. You may wish to talk to your loved ones or family doctor about the problems that you are facing. Learning on how to cope with your anxieties and stress can prevent many illnesses from happening. Some believe that it is your mental health that can determine whether you have a poor or strong immune system.

In conclusion, it is important to live well and enjoy life. Taking preventive measures for health and wellness is worth the price of being diagnosed with a terminal illness or becoming bedridden for life. Adopt some health and wellness practices and see your overall wellness soar!

Glucose Meter: Take A Minute To Shop

0

If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with diabetes, one of your first steps will likely be to find a glucose meter. There are some things to keep in mind as you make your decision because this piece of equipment is likely to be part of your life for the foreseeable future.

Cost is a major issue for most people, but theres good news if you have any kind of medical insurance. A glucose meter is typically considered to be a vital part of medical treatment and insurance companies often pay for a portion or the entire cost of the meter. At the same time, there is sometimes a limit on the amount the insurance company will pay, and that may severely limit your options.

While cost is naturally important, remember that youre going to be living this life from now on. Finding a cheaper glucose meter that requires a more serious stick for blood may seem like the best option when youre writing the check for the meter, but the tedium of the daily stick may negate that cost in the long run.

There are some companies out there that help with the cost of a glucose meter if you meet specific income guidelines. This may be a good answer if your quandary about which meter to buy is purely based on financial restraints. Remember that Medicare often pays on this important testing equipment as well. Your doctor, druggist or representative of a local medical supply company may also be good sources of information about how to find the best deals and how to get help paying for a glucose meter.

Finding a very inexpensive glucose meter may be the best answer to this situation. If the meter is accurate, itll get you through the initial period of adjusting your life to the regular testing of your blood sugar. Then take time to do some research into whats hot and whats not in glucose meters. Youll find that some make absolutely ridiculous claims and you may have to ask some questions to find those companies that produce the glucose meter that will work best for you and your lifestyle.

One of the great things about the Internet is that its created a global community for discussions of topics such as diabetes. Youll find there are a number of forums that will allow you to talk to others facing your situation. This is a good place for information about which glucose meter is the latest and greatest in technology, and which companies are making claims that are simply not true.

Symptoms may include increased thirst and urination, fatigue, and weight loss, among others. The sooner you get a firm diagnosis, the better outcome you are likely to have.

Diabetes results from the bodys reduced ability to make insulin. When this happens, body organs can be affected as the circulation slows, leading to slow wound healing times and loss of feeling in the extremities. Eventually, without treatment, diabetes can progress to organ failure, especially the kidneys and heart, as well as possible blindness, strokes, and other problematic conditions.

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, ask your doctor about a personal management plan. Read all the information you can find about your condition, and ask your doctor any questions about things you dont understand. It may be helpful to borrow library books or visit online medical Websites to find out how others cope and what types of possible new cures or treatments are on the horizon.

Your doctor may advise you to change your diet to one that is low in sugar, fat, and salt. He or she may want you to begin a daily exercise program unless you already have one. You might have to do finger sticks for your blood sugar each day, perhaps after eating or at others times, to check blood readings. Depending on the status of your disease, you may have to take pills or give yourself daily injections. When your blood sugar levels get too high or too low, you could experience life-threatening complications.

It may be a good idea to wear a bracelet or necklace identification tag, so that if you should happen to pass out or become dizzy from blood sugar changes, someone will know how to help you. Carrying a small amount of sugar in the form of orange juice or a candy bar might be helpful if you begin to feel light-headed or your levels start to drop. Let coworkers and friends know about your condition so they can take appropriate steps if you experience difficulties from your diabetic condition.

Joining a support group could help to relieve anxieties and put you in touch with others who have been where you are. Their experience and insight can help you to adjust with a new diabetic diagnosis or a significant change in your condition. This could be particularly welcome if you are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant, since this may impact the status of your diabetes.

Although diabetes is a complex condition and more needs to be known about its development and progress, there is hope and success for many who struggle with the side effects of this disease. Help is available, so dont hesitate to ask for and make use of it.
